The Lone Ranger Gets A New Writer

The Lone Ranger Gets A New WriterIt's not the most obvious match-up in the world, but the pairing of Revolutionary Road screenwriter Justin Haythe and producer Jerry Bruckheimer for The Lone Ranger sounds rather interesting to us, as the film – set to star Johnny Depp as Tonto – moves ahead slowly.

Haythe previously worked on the now-mothballed 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Captain Nemo project for Disney, and his attachment to The Lone Ranger is the first movement it's seen since Depp's attachment was announced 18 months ago. Presumably Bruckheimer's hoping that he can squeeze Tonto into Depp's schedule straight after Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, probably right before Depp then goes off to play someone in a Tim Burton film and then make an interesting indie.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Ranger, he was a masked cowboy vigilante-type who righted wrongs, daringly did derring dos (often involving horse riding, lassooing or, for preference, both) and wore a mask. Tonto was his smart and savvy Native American sidekick, who tended to call his companion Kemosabe.
