It was a night that saw Avatar awarded, the Dude abiding (for Crazy Heart), The Hangover and Holmes as more surprising winners and Ricky Gervais plugging and quipping his little heart out.
Yes, while some of you slumbered in your beds (those that didn't stay out all night like the party animals you are), Empire's dedicated West Coast (Online) team watched the Golden Globes live. Sort of. On his telly.
Handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (they're like the Mafia, but more dangerous if they've got drinks in them), the Globes chose this year to make James Cameron their king once more, as Avatar walked away with Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director. In his speech, Cameron classily suggested that the award should have gone to ex-Mrs James Cameron, Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow.
Some of the choices were exactly as many pundits predicted – Up won Best Animated Feature Film, Jeff Bridges got a standing ovation as he scored Best Actor (Drama) for Crazy Heart, and Meryl Streep – who was already ahead after getting two nominations – predictably scooped Best Actress (Musical Or Comedy) for Julie & Julia.
More surprising were The Hangover running off with Best Motion Picture (Musical Or Comedy), and Robert Downey Jr as Best Actor (Musical Or Comedy) for Sherlock Holmes. But then when you've got a showman like Downey in the room, it's madness not to find some way to get him on stage – like a wind-up toy of pure entertainment, he just needs to be let loose.
Best moment of the night? Robert De Niro – along with Leonardo DiCaprio – presenting the Cecil B DeMille award to Martin Scorsese and giving us the graphic image of Marty making sweet, sweet love to a reel of film, complete with colour narration. It was disturbingly hilarious.
Here, then, for your delectation, the complete list of lucky films and folk. We've included the TV winners underneath also. Go Glee! Hooray for Mad Men! And thank goodness someone gave John Lithgow a gong for Dexter over bloody Jeremy "I get the Emmy every year even though my performance is always one-note" Piven for Entourage. Serial killer FTW…
